Franzese honored as YWCA Woman of Influence

Professor Paula A. Franzese was named a Woman of Influence by the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Essex and West Hudson on November 2, 2002.

As explained in their mission and purpose statement, the YWCA is a women's membership movement guided by a vision of peace, justice, and freedom for all people.

It promotes civil rights, women's issues, and childcare legislation as a means towards the ultimate goal of empowering women and eliminating racism.

Franzese's many accomplishments are consistent with these goals. Of note are her positions as President of the National Justice resource center, member of the Essex County Commission on Unity, and founder of the New Jersey Mentor Program.

The YWCA Board of Directors bestowed this honorable distinction upon Professor Franzese in recognition of her long-standing commitment to the public interest and to the vision of the YWCA.

From Professor Franzese's acceptance speech

"There is a force that meets good with good; that honors the generous impulse with the human response. By anchoring ourselves in love in all situations, let us be the midwives to a new generation.

Our lives are shaped most not by what we take with us, but by what we leave behind. At the hours of our deaths, what is it that will be said of us? Let it be said that together, one heart, one mind, one day at a time, we ushered in a chain reaction of the human spirit."
